Focus now shifts to Congress Working Committee meeting where a final decision will be made
The ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) on Tuesday unanimously endorsed the creation of a separate state of Telangana.
“The UPA unanimously decided in favour of Telangana,” RLD leader Ajit Singh told reporters after a meeting of the constituents of the ruling coalition at the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Replying to questions, there are “so many issues” but a decision was taken today in favour of Telangana.The Congress Working Committee (CWC) is likely to weigh in on it today itself. The proposal will then go to the Union Cabinet and then Parliament. The implementation of the decision, if approved by cabinet and Parliament, could take four to six months.
However, a bifurcation may raise serious questions about the status of Hyderabad, the current Andhra Pradesh capital where Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc. have offices.India created three new states — Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh — in 2000.
